Monitoring the condition of your pool water is one of the most important parts of pool maintenance. Cloudiness is the first sign that your pool is dirty and is in dire need of cleaning. It could be caused by either organic matter in the pool or by a buildup of bacteria. You will want to clean it up as soon as you can because it is unsafe to swim in dirty pool water.
Chlorine Levels are Out of Balance
While chlorine can help keep your pool clean, too much is just as bad as too little. Chlorine turns into chloramine and if your pool water smells of this substance (particularly if it smells just like chlorine) it means that the levels are out of balance and you don’t actually have enough chlorine. Get rid of these problems by simply adding more chlorine.
The Filters Are Compromised
Something could also be wrong with the filters. The filters are designed to eliminate dirt and debris in your pool that could make the water murky. Make sure you run the pool filter for at least eight hours per day – this is the ideal run time. Swapping out the cartridge filters more often can also help.
Too Much Calcium
Calcium can present more of a problem than you might expect at first. Hard water is filled with many different minerals such as calcium and magnesium. Calcium deposits usually collect along the edges of the water getting a water softener is key, as is draining out half the water and then refill that missing half.
Excessive Algae Buildup
Normally, the water in your pool should be a crystal clear blue. Algae can turn your pool water green. When the algae bloom happens it will be identical to the cloudy pool water. Even though this doesn’t seem like a problem, you could wake up tomorrow to find your pool is now green. Don’t let that happen to you!
Rain, Rain Go Away
As impossible as it seems, rain can ruin your swimming pool. You should cover your pool before it rains, but you can’t always predict when this happens – the forecast can be wrong, after all! Rainfall helps dilute the water and encourage the growth of mold, mildew, and algae. Test the water’s pH level and adjust it as necessary.
