As summer winds down, your pool needs attention before cooler weather arrives. Proper end-of-summer pool maintenance protects your equipment, preserves water quality, and helps prevent expensive repairs. Whether you plan to close your pool or keep it open into the fall, use this checklist to keep everything in excellent condition.
1. Remove Leaves and Debris
Skim the water regularly and empty the skimmer and pump baskets. Brush the walls, steps, and waterline, then vacuum the pool floor. Removing organic debris helps prevent stains, algae growth, and clogged equipment.
2. Test and Balance the Water
Check your pool’s pH, alkalinity, calcium hardness, and sanitizer levels. In most pools, the pH should remain between 7.2 and 7.6. Properly balanced water protects swimmers, pool surfaces, plumbing, and equipment.
If you plan to close the pool, balance the water several days before winterization. Follow the manufacturer’s directions when adding any seasonal chemicals.
3. Inspect the Pool for Damage
Examine the interior finish, tile, coping, decking, ladders, handrails, and other features. Look for cracks, loose materials, discoloration, or water loss that could indicate a leak.

4. Clean the Filter

5. Check the Pump and Equipment
Listen for unusual noises and inspect the pump, heater, valves, plumbing connections, and automation system. Check for leaks, corrosion, loose fittings, or reduced water flow.
Clean the area around your equipment pad and remove plants or debris that could restrict ventilation.
6. Adjust the Maintenance Schedule
Cooler temperatures usually mean less swimming and slower algae growth. However, your pool still needs regular circulation, cleaning, and chemical testing. Adjust the pump schedule based on water temperature, weather, and pool usage without stopping routine care altogether.
7. Prepare Accessories for Storage
Clean and dry floats, toys, removable ladders, maintenance tools, and other accessories before storing them. Keep these items in a dry, protected area to prevent mold, cracking, and premature wear.
