If you haven’t replaced (or even thought about) your pool liner in a while, it might be time to check on it. Here are some tips for knowing when it’s time to replace your pool liner.

Now that the chill of winter is fading away and the warm breezes of spring and summer are ahead, you are probably planning out your pool opening schedule for the year. If you haven’t replaced (or even thought about) your pool liner in a while, it might be time to check on it. Here are some tips for knowing when it’s time to replace your pool liner.

What Do Pool Liners Do?

The pool liner is a protective barrier that sits between your pool itself and the water in the pool. If you have an above ground pool, the liner is typically the only thing preventing the metal frame from starting to rust. Some inground pools also need to have liners, depending on their construction and installation. If you have tiled walls in your pool, you have a liner built right in!

Signs You Need a New Pool Liner

Pool liners bear a lot of weight and get a lot of use throughout season and off-season, so depending on how much you use your pool, you might need to replace them more frequently than typically recommended. Here are the most common signs your pool liner needs to be replaced:

  • The pool liner is significantly faded in different areas. As the pool liner gets exposure to the sun and fades, the vinyl it’s made from will become hard and brittle. Brittly vinyl is easy to crack and form a leak, so these pool liners should be replaced before filling it up for the season.
  • You notice that you are needing to put more water in the pool than normal. This can be caused by the pool getting more use than it typically does, but it can also be a sign of a damaged pool liner letting your money (water) out!
  • The pool liner is wrinkled. If it is wrinkled, chances are that you haven’t done the best job maintaining the chemical balance in your pool. This can also make the vinyl rip more easily and lead to a leak.
