Keeping Your Swimming Pool Safe for Children

Backyard swimming pools are fun for the whole family, but they can also be dangerous for children without proper safety measures.

A backyard swimming pool is a lot of fun for the whole family and a great way for parents and children to spend time together in the sunshine. Unfortunately, water can be dangerous, and it requires some special consideration in order for everyone, especially children, to remain safe while in and around the swimming pool.

Install a Pool Fence

One of the best ways to keep a pool safe for your children is by installing a pool fence around its perimeter. This isn’t simply a good safety practice, in many localities, it is the law. A secure fence will block entry to the pool, ensuring that children playing outside can’t get in while they’re not being closely monitored. Some pool fences allow visibility into the pool area—these are the best options for those with children because they will allow you to keep an eye on the pool area in case the child finds a way past the fence.

Cover the Pool

If possible, cover the pool whenever it’s not in use. Using a motorized pool cover can make this a simple task that can be done at the press of a button. It is important to be very careful and ensure that the cover is tight enough that the child won’t be able to find a way to slip under it and become trapped. Even if you have a fence around your swimming pool, it is still recommended to cover it when not in use in order to add layers of protection against accidental or unknown entry to the pool.

Use Anti-Entrapment Drain Covers

Anyone swimming in a pool can become trapped by a drain, which is a very dangerous situation to be in. Anti-entrapment drain covers have proven to be incredibly effective at minimizing this risk and keeping swimmers safe. If you already have a swimming pool, check your drain covers to make sure they are anti-entrapment covers and upgrade them if needed. If you are considering having a pool installed, make sure these will be installed as well for everyone’s safety.

Designate a Lifeguard

During pool time with children, designate a lifeguard. This person should take the job of monitoring the pool seriously, keeping a close watch on everyone in the water, and making sure they’re enjoying the pool safely. Having someone that is watching the pool will offer peace of mind, and they’ll be able to respond immediately if something goes wrong.
