Swimming Pool Safety Tips

Sunrise Premiere Pool Builders Swimming Pool Safety

Swimming pool safety is absolutely necessary for every pool owner to consider in order to avoid some seriously dangerous situations.

It’s natural for people (and even animals) to be drawn to the water, which is why backyard swimming pools have been a hot commodity for hundreds of years. Spending time in your pool is a joy, but it’s just a little too common for us to get too used to our swimming pool and we forget how dangerous the water can be. Remember to practice good swimming pool safety with these tips so you can continue to experience relaxing days in the water.

Restrict Access

A significant number of swimming pool incidents happen when you least expect it, especially if you assume that your pool is secure. Unfortunately, many pool owners don’t put as much effort into restricting access to their backyard swimming pool as they should, which can lead to some seriously dangerous scenarios.

One of the most effective ways pool owners can restrict access to their swimming pool is with a 4-sided isolation fence. It might not be the most attractive thing on your property when all is said and done, but it is a critical safety feature for any pool owner, especially those with children and pets. It can also help to keep wildlife out of your pool, so it’s an important addition.

The best addition to a secure pool fence is a gate that is self-closing and self-latching. This should be inspected and maintained regularly to ensure that it is working properly, and the latch should be positioned so that it is out of reach of any children that have access to it.

Cover the Drain

Pool drains create suction, which can be dangerous especially for those who are not strong swimmers—this includes children and aging adults, but it is also often true for pets and other animals. Installing anti-entrapment drain covers and safety release systems makes these areas of your pool significantly less dangerous and minimizes the risk of the pool drain trapping a human or animal.

Establish Pool Rules

The Red Cross has some swimming pool safety rules that they recommend to protect everyone that hopes to enjoy it:

  • Never swim alone—always have a swim buddy present.
  • Never swim while intoxicated or otherwise mentally inhibited.
  • Avoid swimming near drains or any other areas that create suction.
  • Do not dive head-first unless in a pool with a safe area for diving.
  • Always have a swim watcher present.
  • Ensure your swim watcher is of clear mind and undistracted—no phone use, reading, or any activities that distract from watching the swimmers.
