What is the Difference Between a Swimming Pool and Spa Pool?

In order to help you find your perfect pool, here are the main differences between a swimming pool and a spa pool.

When it comes to building the perfect oasis for your home, there are plenty of things to consider. Whether you want a swimming pool for entertaining family and friends all summer long or a spa for relaxing after a long day of work or soaking up the therapeutic qualities, you may have some questions about the right pool for you and your home. Considering size, design, benefits, and your family’s needs will help you determine which is right for you. But what are the real differences between swimming pools and spa pools? To help you find your perfect pool, here are the main differences between a swimming pool and a spa pool.

Size

One of the most significant differences between swimming pools and spa pools is the size. Swimming pools can be constructed quite large and as such, can not usually be moved. A spa pool is a far more portable since it is smaller and easier to install. Spa pools have far more flexible construction options, allowing you to change placement based on the design of your outdoor space. Spa pools also hold fewer bathers than swimming pools. While a swimming pool may be great for entertaining friends and family who can all enjoy a swim, a traditional spa pool will hold four bathers. This makes them excellent choices for personal relaxation and spa therapy at home.

Temperature

A clear difference between swimming pools and spa pools is the temperature. A spa will be kept at a heated temperature of around 100 degrees. This heat can have therapeutic qualities for aches and muscle pains, among other ailments, while swimming pools will not be heated to such a high temperature. This makes swimming pools an excellent option for cooling off on a hot day or hosting a pool party, while spas are great for everyday relaxation.

Construction

Not only are swimming pools and spa pools constructed to different sizes, but they also entail different building materials. Whether your swimming pool is built in-ground or above-ground, it will generally involve large quantities of varying construction materials. In-ground pools will often be constructed with plaster with a plaster spa pool attached. Plaster can be a difficult material to sanitize, so it isn’t always the best choice for a spa. Thermoplastics are a popular choice for spa pool construction, since they are very hygienic and allow for convenient pre-formed seating. They are resistant to bacteria growth and will have little effect on the pH of the spa.
