Fall Spa Tub Maintenance Tips for Cooler Weather

It’s time to do some spa tub maintenance before the weather gets too cold!

A warm soak feels especially inviting when the air turns crisp. Before you settle into a fall routine, give your spa a little attention. Falling leaves, cooler temperatures, and more frequent use can all affect the water and equipment. These spa tub maintenance tips will help you keep it clean, comfortable, and ready whenever you want to use it.

Clear Away Leaves and Debris

Leaves can collect on the cover, around the spa, and in the water each time you open it. Brush debris off the cover before lifting it, and skim anything that falls into the tub. Check the area around the spa, too. Trimming nearby plants and sweeping the surrounding surface can reduce the amount of dirt tracked or blown into the water.

Make a habit of looking at the waterline and seating surfaces while you skim. Wiping away buildup before it becomes stubborn makes the next cleaning easier.

Test and Balance the Water

Water care remains essential as the seasons change. Test the sanitizer level and pH regularly, especially after heavy use, and adjust them according to your spa’s water care instructions. The CDC recommends checking these levels in home hot tubs because proper treatment helps protect bathers from waterborne illness.

Clear-looking water is not enough to tell you whether it is properly treated. Keep testing supplies on hand and follow the directions for the products and system you use. If the water becomes cloudy, develops an odor, or irritates your skin, check its chemistry and address the cause before soaking again.

Clean the Filter

The filter catches particles that would otherwise circulate through the spa. Remove and rinse it on the schedule recommended by your manufacturer, and use a compatible filter cleaner when needed. Inspect the cartridge as you work. If it is worn or no longer comes clean, replace it.

Regular filter care is a small spa tub maintenance task that can make a noticeable difference in water clarity and circulation. Hot Spring Spas also identifies filter cleaning as part of routine hot tub care.

Inspect the Cover and Water Level

A well-fitting cover helps keep leaves out and heat in. Clean its top and underside, then check for damaged seams, loose straps, or gaps where it meets the spa. Secure it after each use, particularly on windy days. A cover that no longer fits or closes properly may need repair or replacement.

Check the water level at the same time. If it drops below the level specified in your owner’s manual, add water as directed so the circulation system can operate properly.

Plan a Water Change Before Freezing Weather

If your spa is due for a drain and refill, fall is a convenient time to do it. Clean the shell while the tub is empty, then refill and balance the fresh water according to your owner’s manual. How often water needs changing depends on use and the spa’s water care system, so follow the guidance for your model. Completing the job before freezing weather arrives makes it more comfortable to work outside.

Decide How You Will Use the Spa This Winter

If you plan to keep soaking through winter, continue your normal water testing and cleaning routine. Check that the cover closes securely and that the spa is heating and circulating as expected. If you plan to shut it down, follow your manufacturer’s winterization instructions or arrange professional service. Draining alone may leave water in the plumbing.

Consistent spa tub maintenance throughout fall prepares your spa for colder days and helps make every soak more enjoyable.
