It’s Time to Deal with Calcium Scale in Your Pool!

However, there is one problem you have to be aware of: calcium scale. What is it, and how do you get rid of it? Let’s talk about it!

The weather is starting to perk up, finally. That means pool season is almost upon us. However, there is one problem you have to be aware of: calcium scale. What is it, and how do you get rid of it? Let’s talk about it!

What Forms It?

Let’s start by looking at the formation of calcium scale. All water will evaporate at some point. There is a residue of calcium left behind. You will then see it on the water in the pool or on the face of the pool, depending on if the pool has any water in it at the moment. Dirt and algae help make the scale easier to see. Be sure to measure the pH of your pool water, along with the amounts of calcium hardness and alkalinity levels, both of which combine with higher temperatures that are part and parcel with the return of spring and summer

Getting Rid of It

Now let’s learn about some methods for removal. Draining your pool seems like the quickest and easiest way to pull this off. That’s not the answer, though. Acid cleansers such as muriatic acid can make a big difference, and so can pH decreasers. Be sure to use putty knives and sponges to apply the acid. Sandpaper and pool stones can also help you get rid of the calcium scale. However, none of these steps will help if you don’t take action. If you have a white pool, then it will be even harder to detect the presence of this problem, since it is the same color. Don’t be deceived, though. The longer you wait to do something, the worse it will get.

Prioritizing Prevention

Finally, let’s turn our attention to prevention. Prevention is perhaps the most important piece of the puzzle. Maintain your pool at all times, even during the remodeling process. Pool shock can get rid of contaminants in your pool, but it can also add calcium that you don’t need. Decreasing the pH level of the water is another good preventative measure. If nothing else works, then it might be time to try water clarifiers. These clarifiers can turn the debris in lumps that the filter can then collect and eject from the pool’s system.
