Pool Exercises To Help You Burn Calories

You don’t always have to swim laps to get fit In your pool. Here are some fun pool exercises to try!

When you think of pool exercise, what do you think of? Endless laps, back and forth for an hour? Toss those notions aside! While you can swim laps if you want to, there are a lot of muscle-building exercises that you can do in your pool. Pool exercises are great for anyone with mobility or joint problems because the water takes away all impact from jumping and adds resistance, which makes some movements more effective. Here are some fun ideas to burn a few extra calories with a pool noodle while you enjoy your pool this summer.

Noodle Crunch

This pool exercise is a great core workout. Using the noodle as support for your arms, start with your legs straight and pull them into your chest. Since you’re not on a stable surface, your ab muscles will work overtime because they need to stabilize both vertically and horizontally.

Noodle Plank

We all know that planks are a great isometric exercise for your abs, but it can be hard just getting into that position sometimes. In the pool, you can hold a noodle in front of you and push it down until you’re in a plank position. Make sure you hold your body in a straight line and your arms are in line with your shoulders while you hold for bouts of 30 seconds (or longer!)

Noodle Knee Tuck

This is a great progression if the noodle plank becomes too easy for you. Start in your noodle plank position, then tuck your knees up to your chest and kick back out. The water will provide resistance both ways and is a great total-body workout.

Noodle Press Down

Hold the noodle in front of you and then push the noodle down until it touches your legs. To really engage your shoulders, you may need to increase the resistance by using something wider, like water weights. You will feel stronger than ever after this pool exercise!

Noodle Flyback

Sit on your noodle, either like a bicycle or a swing-set. Holding your arms straight out, sweep them back and forth to move yourself across the pool. If you can use just your arms, it’s a great chest and back exercise. If you have a hard time with just your arms, you can bicycle kick your legs to assist.
