How to Conceal Pool Equipment with Clever Landscaping

Whether you’re dreaming about your pool addition or you’ve already got one, one thing you may not have considered is the unsightly pool equipment that also has to find a home in your yard.

A swimming pool is like the pinnacle of backyard relaxation, and a great health choice to boot. It allows you the freedom to jump into the cool water on a hot day any time you choose. Plus, what is more relaxing than lying beside a cool, blue pool, soaking in the warmth of the sun? Whether you’re dreaming about your pool addition or you’ve already got one, one thing you may not have considered is the unsightly pool equipment that also has to find a home in your yard. While PVC plumbing, filters, and heaters are a necessity, you probably would rather not have to look at them. If you can’t (or don’t want to) hide the eyesore with a wall or similar hardscaping, consider these landscaping alternatives.

Ornamental Grasses

To conceal pool equipment, consider planting tall ornamental grasses around the offending pieces. While Maiden Grass is the most common choice, Morning Light Grass, Plum Raven Grass, and Zebra Grass are also beautiful options. These grasses all tend to grow tall enough to hide any filter, and they don’t require a lot of maintenance.

Bushes

Bushes are a denser cousin to grasses in the landscaping department. They also grow tall and thick enough to provide a great screen, and some will even grow in planters. Another benefit is that they can help filter out some of the noise from the pool equipment. Just make sure that you choose a bush that won’t grow too big too fast and won’t drop too much debris (don’t add to your cleaning duties)!

Hills or Valleys

Sculpting the land in your yard by adding dirt is the oldest landscaping trick in the book, but it is not always a viable option. It takes a lot of hard work, and it also requires additional space you may not have. The general idea is to add a berm, or a mound of soil, in front of whatever it is you want to conceal, which, in this case, is the pool equipment. The dimensions of the berm will determine how much soil you need for it. Once it is built, you can plant it with grasses or bushes, as described above, for even better concealing.
