Weekly Maintenance
There are some chemical tests you should repeat every week to keep your pool clean and working well. You’ll need to keep up with the salinity–it should be about 2,500ppm to 4,500ppm. Pick up a saltwater testing kit to figure this one out. Also, check your pH levels, which should be at 7.5 on a general basis. And, while your saltwater pool prides itself on the saltwater itself, you still have to check the chlorine levels. These should be about 1 to 3ppm.
Monthly Maintenance
This is a longer checklist, but don’t feel intimidated! A lot of pool testing kits allow you to do these in one full swing. Try to do these on the first of every month, so you keep yourself on schedule. Check your alkalinity, calcium hardness, stabilizer levels, your copper, iron and manganese levels, and lastly you’ll be looking for a total dissolved solids count. Your pool testing kit will tell you exactly what these levels should be. There are also multiple products on the market that can be added to your water if there’s a problem with any of these levels.
Yearly Maintenance
When you first open your pool every year, you should go through these maintenance steps. First, clean your salt cell! While these tend to last a long time with good maintenance habits, you’ll still need to rinse off the calcium deposits that have formed over the winter and past seasons. Also, a zinc anode will be a life-saver if you have steel anywhere in your pool design. You’ll also want to add a little salt, because there’s no doubt the salt levels have decreased over time due to splash-out and general chemical interaction. In order to close your pool properly, invest in a pool closing kit.
