Pool Design Trends of 2015

Outdoor pool design trends

Stones like travertine, limestone, and flagstone are popular for pool surrounds and outdoor patios.

If you are thinking about adding a pool to your yard next year, now is the time to start the process of designing your dream pool. Here are some of the hottest pool design trends this year.

Fire Features

The duality of fire and water has fascinated people for decades. Incorporate a little fire into your backyard oasis by integrating a fire pit into your pool or water feature. Adding several small fire features around a pool’s edge or into a decorative wall surrounding the water is an upscale version of this new pool design trend. If you have the budget, you can really take fire features to the limit.

Glass Tile

One of the most popular pool design trends for this year is glass tile. Glass tiles reflect the light off the pool water and lend an iridescent look to the backyard. Depending on your budget, glass tiles can be placed in a border around your pool’s waterline, or be used to line the entire inside of the pool. Glass is considerably more durable than other tile options like ceramic or porcelain, and comes in a variety of styles, shapes, and sizes.

Sloped entries and ledges

Some pool designers are forsaking stairs and creating pools that mimic the gradual slope of the beach. Beach entry pools are a great pool design trend to accommodate children, the elderly or disabled. If you don’t have room for a full beach entry, you could try and incorporate ledges or baja shelves. Set at a water depth of about one foot, these are usually designed to hold a few lounge chairs for relaxation without complete submersion.

Natural Decking Materials

A pool design trend related to the area surrounding your pool is natural decking materials. Stones like travertine, limestone, and flagstone are popular for pool surrounds and outdoor patios. Tumbled pavers are also gaining popularity to give pools a more natural look and offer good drainage at the same time. Wood decking around pools is returning to the spotlight, with redwood, teak and cedar being the most popular woods once treated with water-resistant sealers to prevent warping or rotting.
