Figuring Out How Much Water You Need

Figuring Out How Much Water You Need
Filling up your pool with enough water is one of the most important tasks you will need to complete this summer.

Filling up your pool with enough water is one of the most important tasks you will need to complete this summer. However, it can be a bit of a struggle to determine just how much water you require. Beyond the obvious factors of comfort and depth, you may be asking why this knowledge matters so much. In short, it’s for proper maintenance.

For a Square or Rectangular Pool

Do you set your pool depth to a certain level, or does it fluctuate? This is the question you must ask yourself before you begin. If you have a constant depth, you just have to do some multiplication involving the length and width to get the depth in cubic feet. Then multiply the depth by 7.5 to get the gallons of water that you have.

For example, let’s say that your pool is 30×12 and 4 feet deep. That means the equation is 30x12x4 and a total of 10,800 gallons of water.

For a Round Pool

Calculating how much water you need for a round pool is simpler by comparison. All you’ve got to do is find the volume like it was a cylinder. So the equation would be (length x depth)  LxD and then divide by 2. Let’s assume that the radius is 30 feet and then you divide by 2 to find the diameter – 15. Then multiply that by 15 again – 225. The formula you follow now is 3.14 x r2 (225) x depth (7) x 7.5. All of this equals roughly 37,091 gallons.

For a Freeform Pool

Unlike the first two types of pools, a freeform pool can have unusual measurements. Add the three widths together and then divide by three. So let’s suppose the three widths are 30,12, and 30. You would then do 30 + 12 +30 which is 72. Then divide 72 by three and then you get 24 feet. Now let’s say that the pool has an average depth of 5 and it is 32 feet long. So this means that the next equation is 5x24x32 which equals 3,840 cubic feet. Multiply that measurement by 7.5 to get how many gallons you need. In this case, it would be 28,800 gallons.
