What Should I Consider Before Designing A Pool?

Before you jump at the chance to install a swimming pool in your backyard, there are several things to think about. What are those things? This article from BestHomeDesign.Blogspot.com explains. There are several steps in between choosing to install a pool and installing a pool, several steps that many homeowners forget to address.

So what should you be researching before you even think about calling a pool builder?

Pool Type

As you may know, there are several different types of pools available, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. Your options include: above ground pools, which are cheap and easy to install, but less aesthetically pleasing than other options; fiberglass pools, which are great for complex designs (something we will discuss later), but are expensive and have limitations in terms of depth and size; concrete pools, which offer flexibility in terms of design, but are also costly; and vinyl lined pools, which do not last long, but are cost-effective and easy to maintain.

The key is to plan ahead and determine what type of pool fits your needs, design, and budget.

Pool Design

With the wide variety of pool types, you can imagine the flexibility you have in terms of design. Take into consideration the picture you have in your mind, the contour of the landscape, and your budget. This is a very important step in the process that will dictate the appearance of your pool, and most likely your entire backyard.

Features

Will you be adding any frills: maybe a spa, or some additional pool lighting? This kind of decision needs to be made at the same time as the overall pool design and it will impact significantly on the type of pool you choose.

Saltwater or Chlorine

Saltwater pools have become increasingly popular over the past few years and have some definite advantages over traditional chlorine pools. Many people find the saltwater to be gentler on their skin, but salt can cause damage, over time, to the lining of your pool, as well as cement, masonry and underwater lights.

Maintenance

You need to choose the right pool cleaner, cover and pump for your swimming pool.

Landscaping

Obviously, your pool will affect the look and feel of your landscape. Do you have an overall plan for your landscape? How does your pool fit into that plan? You should have some idea as to how you want your backyard to look.

So be sure to plan, plan, and plan some more.
