Helloooo, pool season! Take a page out of this kid’s book and grab a USA floatie to increase comfort and safety in the water.

Can you believe it? Memorial Day weekend is finally here! It’s time to reopen your swimming pool, put on your bathing suit, grab a cold beverage, and soak up the sunshine poolside with your friends and family. Being a pool owner means you’ve got some serious summer fun in your future. We are here to share a few water safety tips with you that will help you maintain the ultimate safety and enjoyment of your Memorial Day weekend pool party, and every pool party thereafter.

Always Supervise Your Swimmers to Prevent Drowning

Since you are a pool owner, it’s safe to assume that you know how to swim. If you have a pool on your property and plan to entertain young swimmers, it is absolutely essential that you make sure they know how to swim before allowing them to jump in or play near your pool. Drowning is the leading cause of injury-related death for children ages 1-4, and the last thing you want is for a preventable accident to happen on your property. Learn about the importance of teaching your child to swim. Keep lifejackets and floaties on hand for swimmers that need extra assistance, and never let children swim in your pool without supervision.

Don’t Forget Water-Resistant Sunscreen!

The forecast in Maryland is calling for high temps in the high 80s this Memorial Day weekend, so make sure you protect your skin from harmful UV rays if you plan to spend time outside. Stock up on water-resistant sunscreen that has a high SPF and encourage all of your swimmers to apply it generously 30 minutes prior to sun exposure. For further water safety on your property, remember the following tips:

  • Don’t swim when you are feeling ill
  • Don’t swim without supervision
  • Don’t swim after dark without pool lighting
  • Avoid running on your pool deck
  • Don’t forget to reapply sunblock every two hours or as it wears thin from water exposure
  • Teach children that suctions and drains are not to be played with
  • Invest in a child safety fence to prevent children and pets from unintentional injury
  • HAVE FUN!
