How to Add a Swimming Pool to a Small Yard

Have you ever laid awake at night, in the middle of a snowy winter, fantasizing about the warm days of summer, lounging beside your beautiful swimming pool?

Have you ever laid awake at night, in the middle of a snowy winter, fantasizing about the warm days of summer, lounging beside your beautiful swimming pool? No? Is that because you don’t have a pool, and you have no hope of adding one to your postage-stamp backyard? Let’s think again. Just because you don’t have space for an Olympic swimming pool doesn’t mean you can’t add a cozy pool retreat to your landscaping.

Intimate Lounging

Just because you don’t have the space to swim laps doesn’t mean it isn’t a pool. You can tuck a cozy little pool into the corner of your yard, and use it for relaxing in the cool water and hot sun. Add a trickling waterfall and some potted plants to give an ambiance to the area, and you’ll quickly stop thinking of it as small and start thinking of it as romantic.

Creative Design

Just like swimming pools don’t have to be huge, they also don’t have to be rectangular, circular, or “kidney-shaped.” Allow the landscape of your small yard to influence the design of the pool and go a little freeform with the shape of it. Consider a series of small terraced pools with waterfalls that flow one to the next. Or you could sacrifice your patio to the pool, then build chaise lounges (so you still have something to relax on) and add a table and bench seating (to sit around talking and drinking). Another benefit of a small pool is that they can often cost less, meaning your pool budget can stretch to cover some nice, luxury additions like a poolside fireplace or specialty lighting, a suspended bed over the water, or a swim-up bar top built into the side of the pool. These luxury additions can make the small space feel bigger than it did before.

When Laps are the Goal

Sometimes the whole point of a pool is gaining the health benefits of swimming, and you can still get that in a small yard. If your yard has a long and narrow slice of land, you can build a pool just for laps, a long lap lane down your yard. If you don’t have even that sort of space, you could consider a swim spa. These pools include jets that create a current that you swim against, allowing you to swim laps without moving through actual space.
